Sweden edge the Norwegians….just!

Sunday’s evening game was so far the best that this tournament has had to offer – Norwegians had their first game in this years tournament and gave Swedes a right scare. At half-time Norway should have been ahead by few points – but the Swedes came and tied it at the last moments of the opening 20 minutes of the game.

After the break the home team came out with determination and young Norwegian side faltered for just a moment or two – which was all that the Swedes needed. It was the 9-0 run right after the half-time that turned the game.. the gap was too much for the Norwegians to claw back – despite a valiant effort by the whole team.

Every time Norwegians pulled back some points – the Swedes came back with baskets from two big scorers of the game Anton Gaddefors and Christian Maraker.. at the other end it was Norway’s Terrence Ogelsby that stole the show, 25 points on the night … but he will be left pondering on his shooting percentage from the paint (5/12 = 41%). Same can be said about the whole team – who shot only 35% from the close range, something that is rarely good enough for a win in an International tournament.

Both teams were guilty of some poor ball handling, 20 turn-overs for both teams – something which the Norwegian Head Coach Mathias Eckhoff pointed out after the game. Despite losing the game – Norwegians can take a lot of positives from the 40 minutes – a young team that hasn’t played much together this summer.. and still managed to run Sweden close in the game. Do not be surprised if it is Norway that will spring a surprise in this tournament!!

Sweden now go to have a rest day – before meeting Finland in a crunch-match on Tuesday. Norway on the other hand have less than a day to recover before they meet Finland in Monday’s early tip-off at 6pm.

Above you will see the YouTube clip for the couple of minutes of game action from Sweden vs Norway in the Nordic Championships – I hope you will enjoy the little bit of action from the second half of Sunday’s second game in Sundsvall.
